The charity Jnetics (in partnership with Liverpool Women’s Hospital and Guy’s Hospital) is now offering a screening service for the Ashkenazi Jewish community.
Screening involves a simple test that can identify if we 'carry' one of 9 severe genetic disorders (including Tay-Sachs) that disproportionately affect the Jewish community. 'Carriers' are not affected themselves but are at increased risk of passing on the condition to their children. Though rare, these 9 conditions are all devastating and typically occur when there is no family history.
If you are considering starting a family or having more children in the future, this service provides an opportunity to identify if you are a carrier and if so, helps you consider the different options available to reduce the risk of having an affected child.
